Transparent OLED On the Way – Gizmodo

Transparent OLED On the Way – Gizmodo

It’s hard to wrap your head around at first, but there are a zillion innovations that will be possible now that German scientists have figured out how to make organic LEDs that are transparent. The most obvious application is to incorporate them into conventional LCDs and “transform laminated glass into a display panel.” OLEDs could also be combined with TFT screens for similar uses.

Cool technology. It will be interesting to see how it develops. I think they had similar displays in Minority Report. I am going to have to watch that again just to look for these displays.

Red Hat Wants Xen in Linux Kernel

Red Hat Wants Xen in Linux Kernel
Linux vendor Red Hat Inc. is aggressively pushing to get Xen virtualization technology included in the Linux kernel as quickly as possible.

This is Red Hat’s version of FreeBSD’s jails. It is something completely different. It is backed by a company. There is a competing open source project called vservers, but it is not as fully developed. /. thread explains more.

Apple -Video iPod

Apple – iPod
Witness the evolution of the revolution. First it played songs. Then photos. Then podcasts. Now iPod plays video, changing the way you experience your music and more. Again. In lighter, thinner 30GB and 60GB models starting at $299, the new iPod is music to your eyes.

I like the Archos better, but the new ipod is cheaper and it is looking like you can buy TV shows online which I think is a great idea. That concept is even more revolutionary than the video feature. It will be amazing when the TV corp exec’s actually think outside of the box and start offering their content on devices other than your local cable company and or satellite provider.

Sources familiar with the thinking at rivals NBC and CBS said those networks have talked to Apple about providing content, but that the $1.99 price tag was too low.

Both networks declined to comment specifically about Apple, although an NBC spokeswoman did say in a statement that NBC “is having conversations with many top players.”

Looks like Apple is having some trouble convincing corp-exe’s to buy off on their idea.

Robot Built for Climbing Alien Cliffs

Robot Built for Climbing Alien Cliffs
An agile robot is being groomed to scale volcanic cliffs on Mars, climb down sheer crater walls on the moon, and traverse the craggy faces of asteroids.

This strange looking device is called a Lemur IIb robot. It is designed to one day climbing the steep terrain, such as the Valles Marineris, to retrieve rock samples. This will help scientists unlock clues about how the Mariner Valley was formed. It will also give scientists a better understanding of the different layers of sediment that might be on Mars.

Here is the homepage of Lemur bot where you can read more about the technology behind him. It is going to be challenging for scientists to figure out how to send data back that the Lemur bot collects, because Lemur does not seem large enough, nor should be, to be able to house the batteries and antenna large enough to send a signal back to earth. Then again this might be one of the several different types of robots that the folks at JPL want to use to do their sample return mission.

You need a password for the Windows network logon, your e-mail account, your homepage’s ftp password, online passwords (like CodeProject member account), etc. etc. etc. The list is endless.
