Linksys, a division of Cisco, announced yesterday that they are now offering several VoIP phones. Here is a list with links to their new products.
The CIT400 or WIP320 look like the best of the bunch because they don’t require computers to operate.
My computer spins down the hard drives after 3 hours and so this means that I couldn’t receive phone calls on some of these. Also what about when I am playing a video game or burning a DVD. I want to be able to receive calls but also I don’t want to either buy dedicated computer to receiving/make calls. The power consumption doesn’t make sense cost wise.
The ones that require a computer could screw up something if your in the middle of a video game or burning a DVD. Some video games take up a lot of RAM and CPU and if I received a call the game could crash or slow down when I don’t want it too. Burning DVDs takes up a lot of CPU and I/O to the hard drives and receiving a call could cause the burning process to fail which would ruin the DVD disc.

Electronista
ASUS today launched two computer mainboards that the company says will convert any telephone into a VoIP-capable device.
They are now bundling an adaptor called TeleSky with two motherboards that will allow people to make Skype calls with any normal home phone.

This is a great combo for the Mac. I am glad I bought it. I did have some problems getting it working thou. The Logitech Control Center (LCC) that came with it didn’t work when installing it from the CD. I had to download it from their website, eject the CD and install it. It took a couple times before I figured out how to get it installed. It makes the computer reboot to finish installing but it wasn’t completing the install. I think ejecting the CD before installing helped.
The other thing that bugs me is getting it working with Firefox. I was able to bind the side buttons on the mouse to get the Forward and Backward to work by binding the side buttons to apple+right and apple+left respectively. However I haven’t got the middle click to open a new tab working.
If anyone knows how to get middle click on a link in Firefox and it opens a new tab to work that would be awesome. It is really bugging me. The weird part is I think it used to work for this mouse or maybe the other mouse and now it doesn’t.

ok. I got it now. I didn’t see that you could configure the wheel button to be advanced click.
on the right side of the window where it says click there is a drop down menu that you can change the options. That allows you to do what is needed.

eHomeUpgrade | Monolith Media Center

People always complain that building your own MythTV DVR box requires some kind of degree in computer science. Well, now you don’t have to let your inexperience in PC building hold you back. You can pick up this hot little pre-configured number called the Monolith Media Center (MonolithMC) – powered by MythTV on top of Ubuntu Linux – and replace your outdated TiVo and/or MCE box.

This graph comes was produced after hours spent crunching nubmers using matlab. S&P has recently upgraded their stock from a strong sell to “Sell”, but with our data we were able to accurately make a prediction of Sony’s stock in the future.

It was encouraging to find in our research that the money Sony will loose when PS3 is released will partially be recovered through their aggresive lawsuit tactics against children and the elderly.
With Sony you can be assured that your content will be “protected” from the evil consumers with aggresive use of DRM. Even so far as to install rootkits on everyone’s computer without their permission. We all look forward to the new DRM that is included, as an added bonus, on every Blu-Ray disc that you buy.

Why Windows is less secure than Linux
I knew it all along, but it took some really clever people to make some imagery that outlines this simple fact.
Windows is inherently harder to secure than Linux. There I said it. The simple truth.
Many millions of words have been written and said on this topic. I have a couple of pictures. The basic argument goes like this. In its long evolution, Windows has grown so complicated that it is harder to secure. Well these images make the point very well. Both images are a complete map of the system calls that occur when a web server serves up a single page of html with a single picture. The same page and picture. A system call is an opportunity to address memory. A hacker investigates each memory access to see if it is vulnerable to a buffer overflow attack. The developer must do QA on each of these entry points. The more system calls, the greater potential for vulnerability, the more effort needed to create secure applications.
If you look at the two images, the windows image has many more system calls which means there is a greater potential for a vulnerability. The secunia site is interesting when comparing Windows Server 2003 and RedHat Enterprise Linux AS 4 it is apparent that windows had a greater percentage of security problems that were rated Medium - Extreme. Also given the fact that Microsoft has been notoriously slow to patch, the choice seems obvious to me. Although, unfortunately the better choice in operating systems is sacrificed becuse your developers are unfamiliar and unwilling to work with Linux.

bit-tech.net | A conversation with Cory Doctorow
Cory Doctorow is something of an online legend. He’s famous for a number of things: for being a great Sci-Fi writer, for his work as a copyright activist, and for being co-editor of what Technorati has suggested is the Most Linked-to Blog in the World, Boing Boing. Now resident in London, we took a trip down to the capital to talk to Cory about his blogs, his writing and his opinions on the world of content and DRM.

How to Subscribe to TV Shows Using The Democracy Player, Bittorrent, and RSS
The Democracy Player is an amazing open source Internet TV application that allows you to subscribe to video RSS feeds from anywhere on the web. The default feeds will keep you supplied with endless viral and music videos from del.icio.us, Videobomb, and Telemusicvison, but with a little hackery, The Democracy Player will make you wonder why youre still paying your cable bill.
