US Zip Codes and States

So I decided recently to work on getting a list of zip codes for the United States, in case I needed them in the future. I thought that it might be useful. I already had a list of US States, but I added a State FIPS code to correspond to the FIPS code in the Zip Code table.

I saved both files as ODF, CSV and SQL. You can download them here.

The SQL files will let you import the information into your database, so you can build awesome web applications! I don’t think the zip code table is a complete list of zip codes, but it is the best I have for now. If you have anything that is more current, please let me know.

Reminder:
Only approved sites can link directly to the files. Please link to this page instead.

The Dumbing of America

A great article yesterday about the decline of citizens in the US who can’t think for themselves.

“The mind of this country, taught to aim at low objects, eats upon itself.” Ralph Waldo Emerson offered that observation in 1837, but his words echo with painful prescience in today’s very different United States. Americans are in serious intellectual trouble — in danger of losing our hard-won cultural capital to a virulent mixture of anti-intellectualism, anti-rationalism and low expectations.

We are too busy with our great distractions that we don’t take any time anymore to improve ourselves after formal schooling.

Why the Judicial Branch is Ineffective

They aren’t partial. They are republican biased and republican controlled. Yes that means that before Democrats controlled the Majority in Congress, Bush controlled all three branches of our government. No wonder it seemed like we were slipping into Fascism, right?

It is no surprise that the Judicial Branch is going to support whatever GWB says, when 78% of them are Republican and 45% were nominated by GWB. That is why they have failed to do anything about Bush’s support of Torture, Bush’s Illegal Domestic Surveillance, Net Neutrality, Internet Radio, Copyright Reform, Firing of US Attorneys and of course his endless Iraq war.

Republican Nominated Justices

  1. John G. Roberts (Chief Justice - GWB)
  2. John Paul Stevens
  3. Antonin Scalia
  4. Anthony Kennedy
  5. David Hackett Souter (GWB)
  6. Clarence Thomas (GWB)
  7. Samuel Alito (GWB)
  8. Sandra Day O’Connor (Retired)

Democratic Nominated Justices

  1. Ruth Bader Ginsburg
  2. Stephen Breyer

House holds Bush confidants in contempt

The vote was 223-32 to hold presidential chief of staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers in contempt. The citations charge Miers with failing to testify and accuse her and Bolten of refusing Congress’ demands for documents related to the 2006-2007 firings.

Republicans said Democrats should instead be working on extending a law — set to expire Saturday — allowing the government to eavesdrop on phone calls and e-mails in the United States in cases of suspected terrorist activity.

The Republicans are ruining this country. How do these people get away with this shit in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
